There is perhaps no better way to make a fashion statement than with your shoes. Although shoes come in many different shapes and sizes, it seems as if flip-flops are one of the more popular options. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking on a beach in Florida or if you are hanging out at home, they are an easy option that just slips on your feet very easily.

Although flip-flops are very popular, most people are not aware of the dangers that are associated with wearing them. Not only can they cause pain in the heel if they are worn too frequently, you also may be setting yourself up for a nasty tumble if you’re not careful. Some of the damage that can be caused by flip-flops is permanent and severe, so it certainly is best if you know the dangers before you put them on. 1. Tripping – if you have ever tried running in flip-flops you know that they catch very easily on almost anything that is coming by. If you get used to wearing flip-flops, you tend to take shorter strides and that can change your gait.

2. Hard on the feet – Since you are changing your gait when you wear flip-flops, it can lead to some rather difficult problems. Those problems can include dislocations and hammertoe. There is a lack of support with most flip-flops and some people experience leg pain as a result.

3. Bacteria – Although a lack of physical support probably leads the list, you also need to consider that you are exposing your feet to the elements. This could include toxic bacteria. The University of Miami did a study on those who were flip-flops of, they had significantly more bacteria than traditional shoes, especially when they are worn to public restrooms.

4. Blisters – Most flip-flop straps can put pressure on the top of the foot and create friction between the toes. This could lead to painful blisters.

6. Plantar fasciitis, poor posture and bone spurs – These are a number of difficult issues that can occur as a result of the use of flip-flops. Some of these problems could require surgery and if you have one issue, it could lead to another.

7. Plastics – Believe it or not, flip-flops are sometimes made out of poisonous plastics. Having them on your skin directly day after day could have negative health effects.

8. Bunions – Since you are using your toes together for traction when walking, it is not out of the question to develop bunions over time.
