One of the items that all of us use on a regular basis is our cell phone. It doesn’t matter whether we use it for social media, email, checking the weather, or just to pass the time, it is often found in our hands.
Since we use our electronic devices so often, we often have areas where we grow accustomed to charging them. We want to make sure that they are powered and running our lives at all times, but there is a danger we need to be aware of.
When the Newton New Hampshire Fire Department posted a note on Facebook about the dangers associated with charging a cell phone, they noted a specific place where you should never do so. Many people were shocked, as it was exactly what they did.
According to the post, about 53% of children and teenagers use the bed as a platform when they are charging their phones at night. They either place the phone directly on the bed or they even stick it under a pillow.
You might not think that this is a big deal but when you see the risk that is involved, it shows you just how dangerous it can be. In fact, the heat that is generated by charging your device is enough to burn the material and start a fire.
Any time you place a device on a soft surface or if you stick it under a pillow, you aren’t giving the device the opportunity to disperse the heat properly. It builds up and serious problems can occur.
Eventually, the heat can build up to the extent that it causes a fire. In this case, where the bed catches fire, it puts the person charging the device in danger as well as everyone else in the home.
It may seem simple but there is a solution that is often overlooked. Make sure that you consider where you are charging your electronic device. Don’t stick it on your pillow and don’t land on a soft surface, like the bedsheets.
Have a dedicated area where you charge the phone and you will be able to mitigate all of the risks associated with doing it.
