How to Grow Strawberries Using a Dollar Store Laundry Basket

When it comes to working outside, there are few joys greater than gardening. I’m fairly new to gardening since I grew up in the city (and my parents weren’t exactly the type of family to embrace urban gardening). However, my wife is an avid gardener and she’s taught me a lot. One of the things I was surprised to learn is that there are some plants that are perennials, which means that they come up year after year. I guess I sort of knew that about certain flowers, but I didn’t realize that there are actually some fruits and vegetables that you can plant in even a tiny garden space.

For example, mint is an herb that is a perennial. You plant it once and it should come up year after year. However, what I never suspected is that strawberries are also perennials. Typically, you hear about folks growing strawberries in a bed or garden, but one lady has gone viral for planting strawberries in a laundry basket from the dollar store. This is really great news because growing beautiful strawberries isn’t the easiest thing out there. For one thing, pests love them, and for another thing, they have to stay on the vine for a long time to get nice and ripe (sweet and juicy).

Growing strawberries in a laundry basket is an excellent idea for many reasons and it makes it easy for even green-thumb gardeners like me to give it a go. The laundry basket you want to get is the tall one with the holes in it. You can pick this up at Target, Walmart, or any dollar store. Then you use a fabric sack or garbage bag to line the basket. This helps to hold moisture in and will keep a lot of the pests out. Remember, all sorts of bugs love strawberries, including caterpillars, aphids, and fruit flies. By the way, fruit flies lay their eggs in strawberries and that’s gross.

You’ll also need a PVC pipe, potting soil, the basic gardening tools that you enjoy using, and some filler plants to put on top. That makes it really nice and pretty. You’ll also need something to punch holes in the bottom of your laundry basket. This will allow the water to drain. Watch the video below for exact instructions on how to get your own strawberry plants growing in no time.
